The grain market in Vienna was destroyed and burning, the TU building was on fire – the Hungarian ruling party Fidesz distributed flyers with this photo before the local elections in the Hungarian city of Szombathely. The message: If people do not vote for Fidesz, there is a risk of war.
The local community newspaper “Savaria Fórum” was informed of the flyer. According to their research, it is a photo of the grain market from 2013 from the photo platform Pixabay. This has been edited to give the impression of a war zone; a desperate old woman has been added to the foreground. However, the logo of the Technical University (TU) remained clearly visible.
Complaint against party
The flyer is also intended to label opposition-backed mayor András Nemény as a “man of war.” Nemeny appears at the top of the brochure shaking hands with former Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány, Orbán’s favorite longtime enemy. The text underneath reads: “Gyurcsány is a man of war. Nemeny is a man from Gyurcsány. Whoever votes for him, votes for the war!” A non-party member of the Szombathely city parliament filed a complaint against the local Fidesz leadership based on the flyer, the hvg.hu news portal reported.
Not only the European but also local elections will take place in Hungary on Sunday. Fidesz, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s right-wing nationalist ruling party, claimed during the election campaign that a vote for them was the only certainty that Hungary would not be “dragged into war.” The head of government recently urgently warned about the horrors of war during a large demonstration last weekend.
Orban promotes peace
Posters with images of leading opposition politicians within the black letters ‘War’ were also put up across the country. Another poster depicts Orban in blue letters reading “Peace,” with the addition: “We need him more than ever.” However, Fidesz does not comment on whether the campaign concerns the war in Ukraine or another war.
