A pager at the Am Hof beer festival costs 4.60 euros. Breweries and innkeepers defend the price. The guests sometimes see it differently.
A cold beer is still the favorite refreshing drink in summer for many Viennese. The crowds on the opening day of the beer festival were correspondingly large. By lunchtime there was already an exuberant atmosphere on the farm.
“You notice that people want to get out again,” says exhibitor Georg Lehner. The only downside is the prices. The minimum price for a small beer – there are no large ones – is 4.60 euros. “The prices are okay, production costs have risen considerably, we have to pass this on. If you want cheap beer, go to the supermarket,” says Christian Berger from Gasthaus Zur Goldenen Kugel.
There are no splashes at the beer festival
If you want a spritz between beers or don’t drink beer at all, you’re out of luck. Much to the dismay of some stall owners and guests. “I’m not okay with there not being a splash. Young women in particular often do not drink beer, says Berger. There are beer schnapps and beer punch.
And what do visitors say about it? “It seems to me that the beer is smaller and more expensive this year. That irritates me. “I just drink two sidebars and go,” says Herbert Lukisch. Once again, Günther Schinko and his group of friends do not let the prices stop them from drinking more.
