Lower Austria recorded hundreds of operations and damage after the floods: now the major clean-up follows – and the state and the Chamber of Labor also help those affected financially.
In the fight against flooding and heavy rains in the Danube, the country’s fire brigades registered 575 missions on Monday and Tuesday. The worst affected districts were St. Pölten, Tulln, Krems and Korneuburg, where the B6 in the Ernstbrunn area was partially closed due to flooding. The water was knee high, not only on the streets, but also in cellars. Streams became raging rivers.
The first people ask for help in the thousands
Now it’s time to clean up. Quickly and as an unbureaucratic aid, Chamber Chairman Markus Wieser of Labor announced emergency aid of up to 1,000 euros. “So that damage to houses and apartments can be repaired immediately,” Wieser explains. The campaign has only just begun; So far, the AK has received a handful of reports from the districts.
Hang remains life-threatening
After a huge rock fall, life is still in danger on the B33 near Aggsbach in the Melk district. According to Udo Landbauer (FPÖ), the state deputy responsible for traffic, the road will remain closed until further notice. “Loose stones keep falling down. We still have to investigate whether and how the slope will be cleared. Blasting is also possible.”
State emergency assistance is available
State Vice President ÖVP Stephan Pernkopf emphasizes that the state’s disaster relief organization will intervene – in case of hardship, it will even cover half of the damage. To do this, those affected must contact the municipality, which will set up a committee. The extent of the destruction cannot yet be quantified, but Pernkopf is confident that flood protection could have prevented even worse. A daycare center and several private individuals have already requested help from the state.
