After the reports of the ‘Krone’ exposé about giving in to Islam in schools, politicians are also waking up. The Ministry of Education and Integration says: “Austria is a country with a Christian tradition. This is misunderstood tolerance!” Our laws apply in the classrooms.
As reported, two exposé articles caused outrage in the country. At a school in Vienna, a teacher forbade children from reading the Bible ‘out of respect for Muslim classmates’, and in Linz a math lesson assignment was canceled because of Ramadan.
Minister of Education Martin Polaschek shows no understanding for this and demands an attitude towards the ‘Krone’: ‘Austria is a country with a Christian character. It must therefore be clear to every student and every teacher that our rules and laws apply in our classrooms!”
One should not be misled by misunderstood tolerance. In local schools, the main emphasis should be on conveying Austrian culture and our Western values.
Clear approach also at the Ministry of Integration. “This is a misunderstood tolerance that is rightly incomprehensible to many families. We want our Christian traditions to be observed in our country.”
Education boards must investigate each case
As a first consequence, education boards in the states are obliged to investigate “each individual case, which is one too many” – and then take action. This is probably the order of the day, because time is of the essence.
