The young daughter of a respected surgeon is said to have lent a hand in the operating room in Graz – the Public Prosecution Service is investigating. It is still unclear whether the affected patient is even aware of it.
There was a great commotion at the Graz University Hospital on Friday after a ‘Steirerkrone’ report revealed an incomprehensible incident: early this year, the minor daughter of a neurosurgeon allegedly laid hands on a patient during a skull operation. .
The doctor in question enjoys an impeccable professional reputation, as the “Krone” has confirmed from various sources. For many, it is all the more inexplicable why this incident should have happened to her.
There is a risk of five years in prison
The case came about after an anonymous complaint. An investigation into serious bodily harm is now underway. Theoretically, the woman could receive up to five years in prison if convicted, but exhausting this sentence is hardly conceivable. It must also first be clarified whether the possible involvement of the girl caused harm to the patient – the Graz clinic emphasizes that the procedure was “free of complications”. It is also unclear whether the affected person already knows: the clinic did not answer this question to the “Krone”.
The Styrian Patient and Nursing Ombudsman led by Michaela Wlattnig is not aware of a similar case. She is also not involved in the present case, as stated when asked.
Only students and interns allowed
In principle, it is not unusual for other people in addition to the operating team to be present in the room, but according to the LKH, only medical students and interns are allowed. Minimum age: 16 years. According to the Nursing Ombudsman, who has access is the responsibility of the clinic in question, so there appear to be no uniform rules here.
Two employees fired
The police investigation into this case has only just begun. In addition to the doctor, the focus is also on other unknown perpetrators: the operating room staff allegedly did not intervene sufficiently. In late May, two female surgeons were fired until the allegations were finally cleared up.
