Petro announces a ceasefire with the ELN and other paramilitary groups from January 1 to June 30, 2023

This was announced by the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro “bilateral ceasefire” with the National Liberation Army (THAN), the dissidents of the FARC and paramilitary groups, who from January 1 to June 30th from 2023.

The ceasefire will be “extendable depending on the progress of the negotiations,” the president added on his social networks.

In total, there are five groups that have announced the ceasefire: ELN, Central Staff of the disagreements of the FARCthe Second Marquetalia, the Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AGC), and the paramilitaries of the Sierra Nevada.

The president made the announcement shortly before the end of 2022 through his social networks. “We have agreed a bilateral shutdown with the ELN, the Second Marquetalia, the Central General Staff, the AGC (Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia) and the Self-Defense Forces of Colombia. -Defense Forces of the Sierra Nevada from January 1 to June 30, 2023, renewable depending on the progress of negotiations. Total peace will be a reality,” Petro said on Twitter.

Since taking office on August 7, Petro and his government have championed a policy of “total peace” that has already succeeded in resuming negotiations with the ELN in Caracas.

After the announcement, the Secretary General of United Nations, António Guterres, has indicated that he finds the news “welcomed”. Guterres believes this measure “is an event that renews the hopes of lasting peace of the Colombian people in the new year,” the date the agreement entered into force.
