Saturday evening’s thunderstorms caused several mudslides in large parts of Tyrol, forcing emergency services to operate for hours. A car was also hit by the mud mass in Reith im Alpbachtal. Hail also caused anxious minutes.
Several mudslides were the result of sometimes heavy rainfall in large parts of Tyrol. In Reith im Alpbachtal, several mudslides appeared in the Alpbacher Straße around 7:20 p.m. As a result, the road was heavily polluted and parts of it were no longer passable.
All guardian angels on board had a car driver and three passengers. The vehicle was hit by the mud and debris, but was only slightly damaged. Fortunately, the occupants were also unharmed. “A wheel loader was called in and traffic had to be temporarily closed for the cleaning work,” said the Reith im Alpbachtal fire brigade.
The Unterinntalstrasse in the municipality of Mariastein was also hit by a mudslide and mudslide. This caused part of the road to be moved to approximately four meters around 7.34pm. A local diversion has been set up during the cleaning work. Fortunately, no one was injured here either.
Just a few minutes later, a five-meter wide landslide also caused uncertainty in Auffach. At that time, a municipal road was only passable in one lane. The landslide started in a very steep forest and stopped in a flat meadow below the road. No one was injured here either.
But it was not just landslides and mudslides that caused unrest in Tyrol on Saturday evening. In the evening several large hailstones also flew to the ground: within a very short time the landscape was white in some places due to a hailstorm. On some terraces the hailstones were centimeters deep. Until Saturday evening, nothing was known about material damage.
GeoSphese Austria warned of heavy thunderstorms in parts of Tyrol on Saturday morning. The warning level “orange” – i.e. level 3 of 4 – has been declared. The state of Tyrol also warned about the dangers in road traffic and gave instructions on how to behave.
