Enormous damage – assessment after storm: “There has never been anything like this before”

Date:

Despair, fear, but also incredible solidarity: after the heavy storms, the residents of Burgenland have proven that their willingness to help knows no bounds.

There were scenes like in the film that took place on Sunday evening in the Oberwart district. Flash floods caused by heavy rain turned entire cities into raging rivers.

No serious injuries
50 people had to be rescued from dangerous situations and, miraculously, no one was seriously injured. The communities of Wiesfleck and the districts of Schreibersdorf and Schönherrn, Unterschützen and Loipersdorf were particularly affected. The sentiment of the population was unanimous: “Nothing like this has ever happened before – it was apocalyptic!”

Roads closed
The situation was also worse in all communities along the Pinka, where local flooding occurred. There was even a civil defense alarm in Oberwart, Rotenturm and Siget. Many roads had to be closed due to the flooding.

As the day progressed, the first consequences of the devastating storm became clear: damage will run into the millions, clean-up efforts will take weeks – and above all, people remain afraid of new floods, as the weather forecasts promise. no relaxation for the next few days.

Great courage from the residents
What has been shown, however, is that willingness to help and solidarity in the event of a disaster is common in Burgenland, as Wiesfleck’s local boss Christoph Krutzler emphasized. “The despair is great, but also the courage that the population is now gathering to rebuild everything,” said the mayor.

Fast help for everyone
In almost all communities, people tackled the problem, including in their neighbor’s yard, even though their own basement was flooded. Within a very short time, clubs organized meals for the thousands of firefighters and people involved in the clean-up work. State Governor Hans Peter Doskozil also promised quick help.

Support communities
“The country will ensure that the necessary financial resources are available from the country’s disaster fund to provide the necessary support to the people and communities affected by the damage,” Doskozil reiterated. It is important that this financial assistance – including damage not covered by insurance – is handled quickly and unbureaucratically.
