Dramatic scenes took place in the middle of the night on Sunday in Burg in the south of Burgenland. Heavy rain showers completely flooded the campsite in a short time. Entire families were surprised by the flood. The fire brigade started a rescue operation.
The storms that hit the Oberwart district last weekend, causing extensive damage, had a particularly dramatic impact on the quiet town of Burg, which has a population of 200.
Alarm activated
It rained around 3:30 am on Sunday. Streams swelled. Due to the heavy rain showers, the campsite was completely flooded in a short time. The level soon reached the roof of the parked cars.
Nearly twenty guests and visitors were surprised by the flooding in their tents and caravans. They were stuck. The alerted volunteers of the Rechnitz fire brigade quickly came to the aid of the children, women and men in need.
Everyone safe
All those affected were rescued, taken to safety and cared for one by one by boat. “At six o’clock in the morning the worst was over,” it was said after the operation.
