Because the accreditation of a Russian journalist was revoked, Moscow is now expelling an Austrian ORF correspondent from the country. Maria Knips-Witting had been in Russia since early 2024 and reported from there.
An editor at the Russian state news agency Tass had his permanent accreditation revoked. In response, the ORF correspondent must now leave the country, the responsible Russian ministry announced. The station’s radio and television studio previously had two correspondents. In addition to Knips-Witting, this is Carola Schneider.
The embassy warned correspondents
According to a report by the AP news agency, the ministry had ordered Maria Knips-Witting to give back her accreditation and leave the country “in the near future”. The Austrian embassy in Moscow was informed in advance about the impending move and warned the EU country’s media correspondents that the Foreign Ministry could resort to the retaliatory measure, the German news agency dpa also reported.
A response from ORF is currently pending. The Federal Chancellery, which is responsible for accrediting foreign media representatives, told the APA that the matter is under investigation.
