World champion in 1974 and European champion in 1972, four-time German champion and cup winner, three-time Master Cup winner and record player for FC Bayern with 699 appearances – Sepp Maier made a name for himself not only as a football legend, but also as a joker. The 80-year-old talked to the “Krone” about his European championship title in 1972, the approaching European Championship, Austria’s chances and a few anecdotes.
“Kron”: Mr Maier, how do you remember the 1972 European Championship today?
Sepp Maier: That was over 50 years ago, a different time, a different mode. The quarter-finals took place as a qualifying match; if you lost, you were already out. The actual European Championship with the four finalists was completed in five days; today it all takes a month.
