A 46-year-old ski tourer has been buried under an avalanche in Tyrol’s Pitz Valley since Christmas, and numerous searches have been unsuccessful. Now, almost six months after the tragic accident, the search may be on the verge of a breakthrough.
As reported, one day before Christmas 2023, a huge dust avalanche was released from the Rofelewand (3,353 meters) on the Kaunergrat near Piösmes in the Pitztal. She buried a local touring car that was alone in the Rappenkopf area. All attempts by the emergency services to find and save the man in time failed.
Yes, more than that: the local man has been missing ever since. Searches by the Innerpitztal mountain rescue service and the Alpine police in the following weeks and months yielded no results. Not even any of the man’s equipment appeared that could have led to the victim himself. At the end of May the situation changed.
