One day before the dramatic hail damage that struck an AUA aircraft approaching Vienna, another incident occurred on board an Austrian Airlines aircraft. Due to smoke in the cabin, an Airbus had to make an emergency landing immediately after take-off.
The incident took place on June 8 during flight OS561 from Vienna Schwechat to Zurich. The Airbus A320 – the same model involved in the hailstorm – had taken off at 7am, but during the climb there was so much smoke in the cabin that the pilots had to turn back.
Smell like “old socks”
The passengers described the smell on board as similar to ‘old socks’, reports aviation journalist and author Patrick Huber in the online portal ‘Ausrian Wings’. It is possible that the cabin air is contaminated with residues of engine oil – a highly toxic substance.
The AUA aircraft had to make an emergency landing in Vienna-Schwechat just 17 minutes after take-off. No one was injured, the aircraft was taken out of service and subjected to a technical inspection.
