Almost daily stabbings, attacks on police officers – Inner favorites cannot calm down. Now comes the next terrible news for the residents: the police station at Keplerplatz will be closed in July. Problematic: the alternative accommodation is 15 minutes away.
In recent weeks and months, Innerfavoriten has been in the media due to several violent incidents. Initially, even a greater police presence did not change anything, even if it improved people’s subjective sense of safety, as a “Krone” survey showed shortly after the incidents.
The next news seems even more surreal: the police station at Keplerplatz will close in July. This was announced on Wednesday during a press conference of the Vienna FPÖ.
The reason is that the inspection facility at Keplergasse 10 is in a dilapidated state and is about to be demolished. The police officers have to leave in July.
“The 10th district is now a crime hotspot and a multicultural powder keg that joins the troubled areas of Berlin or the outskirts of Paris. Given these circumstances, it is a scandal that the PI Keplerplatz has to be closed in July, because there is already a demolition announcement from August 31,” said Stefan Berger, party leader of Favoritn FPÖ.
New housing on the distribution circuit
Until further notice, the police will be housed near the distribution circle, 15 minutes away from the central point at Keplerplatz. In addition, it has been known for years that the building is in poor condition and we should have responded much earlier, says Berger.
According to the Federal Real Estate Company (BIG), the building at Keplergasse 10 is not in danger of collapsing. “However, it is already getting old, so renovation or demolition followed by new construction is being considered. When a project is carried out, there will be a temporary resettlement,” says a spokeswoman.
Police: just an interim solution
And the police say: “During the reconstruction of the PI Keplergasse, the police will move to a replacement accommodation in the immediate vicinity of the current office at Columbusgasse 7. However, because certain renovation work still needs to be carried out in Columbusgasse, there will be an interim solution for a few weeks. In any case, all patrol measures in the area will be maintained at all times.”
