This week, 400 soldiers of the High Mountain Jaeger Battalion 23 from Vorarlberg practiced the assault theme at the Wattener Lizum military training area at an altitude of 2,200 meters. After a four-year hiatus, the professional soldiers and the battalion’s 140 militiamen were back.
The purpose of the VERONIKA exercise was to combat organized terrorist units that had retreated to the mountains. The soldiers were supported by the armored universal terrain vehicles “Hägglunds” of the Jäger battalion.
A cold spell just on the day of the last exercise demanded a lot from the soldiers. “Rain, fog, cold, that drains our strength and of course influenced our exercise process,” explains Battalion commander Michael Köck about the special challenge: “Nevertheless, we learned a lot from this exercise. I congratulate my soldiers with this achievement and their perseverance, even under adverse conditions.”
