Wild scenes took place at the border crossing on the Völkermarkt on Tuesday evening. A smuggler quickly fled from Slovenian and Carinthian police, prompting a large-scale search.
A follow-up horn on Slovenian territory alerted the Carinthian police on Tuesday evening. Suddenly, a car with a German license plate sped past the police officers in the direction of Carinthia – followed by Slovenian officers.
The Carinthian colleagues immediately gave chase and ran after the initially unknown man through several districts until they finally arrived in Klagenfurt. “The man was unstoppable. We then ordered the A2 Südautobahn to be closed. In the meantime, the police helicopter was already in action,” the emergency services said.
Escape on foot
Because the driver could not continue, he left the highway, got off at the airport and drove towards St. Georgen am Sandhof. He stopped his vehicle there and fled on foot. The last stop was in a barn. Police were able to find the 30-year-old man from Moldova hidden under some rubbish. He was immediately arrested.
Nine Turkish prisoners discovered
In his car were nine Turkish nationals between the ages of five and 40. The handcuffs clicked for them too.
