A suspected Islamist has been in custody in Vienna since last week for allegedly brutally assaulting his girlfriend. The woman is said to have been bullied by the 22-year-old since February after the man, according to her statements, became radicalized while staying with Muslim friends in France for several weeks.
The tyranny is said to have begun in February and, according to the victim, the physical violence began in late April. It is also said that several rapes took place. The suspect denies the accusations.
Met in a Viennese club
The woman met the 22-year-old – during ongoing divorce proceedings – in a Viennese club in September 2023. A relationship quickly developed, but after a few months the man from West Africa started to control the woman.
Only Muslim women are ‘pure’
So he kept calling her and asking where she was when she wasn’t home. After returning from France, he then demanded that she wear a headscarf during Ramadan and now live as he wants. Only Muslim women are ‘pure’, he is said to have emphasized.
Choked and forced to have sex
The man allegedly hit her in the face with his fist about twenty times. He is also said to have strangled her and pulled her hair before using force to force her to tolerate sexual intercourse. Afterwards, the victim was not allowed to leave the apartment for days and had to report sick to work, according to her information.
Woman refused to cover her up
However, the woman, originally from South America – she has lived in Vienna for more than twenty years and works as a laboratory assistant for a renowned company – refused to cover her hair. This may have led to increased tensions within the relationship. The suspect is now said to have regularly searched his girlfriend’s mobile phone and may have also traced her device. When he found out on Instagram that she was looking for a club, the first violent incident is said to have occurred.
The woman discovered a gun in the box
According to the investigation, when she had recovered somewhat, a second rape took place in mid-May, after the woman returned home late from an appointment at her car repair shop due to traffic – she got stuck in a traffic jam. When the victim discovered a gun in the box shortly afterwards, her alarm bells went off. She feared the man would shoot her the next time a disagreement arose. She therefore confided in a colleague and eventually filed a complaint.
“Willingness to use violence and violence is increasing”
The 22-year-old is now being investigated for rape, false imprisonment, actual bodily harm and dangerous threats. The regional court assumed that the reason for his arrest was the risk of committing a crime. The pre-trial detention order speaks of an “enormous willingness to use violence and an increase in violence” on the part of the suspect. It also notes that the woman’s injuries were “impressively documented.”
Bites from “rough sex”
The 22-year-old denies being violent towards his partner. During his police interview, he explained their bruises, abrasions and bite marks as consensual rough sex. He also claimed that her ex-husband once gave her a black eye during an encounter.
