With several Last Generation activists currently in prison, the group paralyzed traffic in Vienna’s Rossauer Lände district on Friday morning. The activists described the meeting, which police said was not reported, as a “solidarity march.” There was a traffic jam on the way to work.
“We have deployed with sufficient troops and are in the process of clarifying the situation,” the Vienna State Police Directorate explained on the platform. The traffic jam stretched as far as the north bridge and numerous emergency services were on the scene.
But why did this unannounced meeting take place? Activists held up photos of several colleagues, including one of well-known climate advocate Anja Windl.
Because she and other supporters are still serving their alternative prison sentences. They started this at the beginning of June. Laila Fuisz and three other men are also under arrest.
“We are protesting peacefully in solidarity with those held in front of the doors of the Rossauer Lände police detention center. They are locked up because they are committed to a future worth living,” the group argued on X.
“Immediate action needed”
“We need immediate climate protection measures instead of focusing on getting rid of protesters,” Johannes Daxbacher, a retired religious teacher, said at Friday’s protest.
The Last Generation also mentioned the current storm damage and events in Styria: “While Styria is underwater, the consequences of the climate crisis have long been clear and science cannot tell us more clearly. The government prefers to lock up the people who An open point for this catastrophe and the government’s lack of action.”
Still, the action caused anger among road users. These also suffered from it, because the journey to the office for the weekend probably took longer…
