From April 1, the HPV vaccination is free until your 30th birthday

Date:

The previous age limit for free vaccination against HPV and various types of cancer is being increased. From July 1, in addition to everyone under the age of 21, everyone under the age of 30 can also receive their vaccination for free.

According to the Ministry of Health, this option applies until the end of 2025. The city of Vienna, the Federal Youth Council (BJV), the Trade Union Confederation (ÖGB) and the Austrian Student Union (ÖH) have jointly called for vaccinations in this case. Until now, the HPV vaccination is free from the ninth to the 21st birthday. The federal, state and social security systems had finally secured the extension until the 30th anniversary announced last week by Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens).

If the first HPV vaccination is carried out before the 30th birthday, all subsequent vaccinations are free, even if they take place after the 30th birthday, the city of Vienna has informed. The free HPV vaccination for everyone with a residential address in Vienna can now be booked online at www.impfservice.wien or by calling the health hotline 1450.

When the vaccination offers the best protection
HPV is the abbreviation for human papillomavirus. It is a larger group of viruses that can cause inflammation and skin changes in the genital area, for example genital warts. The viruses can also cause malignant diseases, especially cervical cancer and, in women and men, other cancers in the genital area and in the mouth and throat. That is why vaccination is important for both girls and boys. It offers the best protection when administered before the first sexual contacts.
