Following an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolution against Iran, Tehran is taking significant steps forward in expanding its uranium facilities.
As the Vienna-based IAEA has announced, Iran has deployed additional powerful centrifuges to enrich uranium. The Islamic Republic has also announced the installation of much more powerful centrifuges.
About 350 of these new machines have already been built in an underground facility in Fordow, with 350 more in the works.
US threatens ‘reaction’
The US State Department reacted sharply to the recent Iranian actions as described by the IAEA. “The steps outlined in the report further undermine Iran’s claim that its nuclear program is exclusively peaceful,” department spokesman Matthew Miller said Thursday. The United States would “respond accordingly” if Iran implements its announcements.
Officially, Iran does not enrich uranium for nuclear weapons
However, the country produces near weapons-grade material with purity levels far beyond the requirements for nuclear fuel or scientific use. In 2015, Iran agreed to severely limit its nuclear program.
In return, Western countries promised to lift sanctions. But then US President Donald Trump quickly canceled this pact. Iran subsequently restarted its uranium facilities.
