The flooding situation on the Vorarlberg shore of Lake Constance has improved and neighboring communities can breathe a sigh of relief. At least temporarily: if heavy rainfall occurs again, the situation could quickly become critical again.
On Sunday morning, the water level in the port of Bregenz fell below 5 meters for the first time in more than a week. For comparison: last Tuesday the water level was 5.15 meters.
The time for earthquakes is also probably over because little precipitation is expected in the coming days. It is quite possible that the first mobile dams can be demolished as early as Monday and that the closed holiday resort “An der Schanz” in Fußach will also have to be reopened.
However, a residual risk remains: the level of Lake Constance is still 80 centimeters above the long-term average and a lot of meltwater is still flowing away. In case of heavy rainfall the situation would quickly deteriorate.
