A 14-year-old Romanian from Traun was hit by a tram in Pasching on Sunday and seriously injured. The cycling boy had tried to cross the track in front of an approaching tram despite the red light. While a friend who did the same was unharmed, the student suffered serious head injuries.
The 14-year-old Romanian from Traun cycled with a friend on the Langholzfeld cycle path towards the Plus-City shopping center at 4.10 pm. At that moment a tram came on line 4 from Linz towards Traun.
Wrongly assessed
At a zebra crossing, the two cyclists were determined to cross the track, despite the red light and the approaching tram. A plan that unfortunately failed for one of the boys.
The driver of the tram immediately applied emergency braking, but the tram did not stop in time. The 14-year-old was hit and thrown several meters. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered serious head injuries.
Tram driver helped
The tram driver and a passenger got out and immediately provided first aid. They noticed that the other cyclist immediately took off. After receiving first aid from the emergency doctor, the 14-year-old was transported to the Linz Accident Hospital.
Passenger also injured
A 30-year-old passenger suffered minor head injuries during the emergency braking and was also taken to UKH Linz. An alcohol test on the tram driver was negative.
