At least fourteen pilgrims have died due to the extreme heat in Saudi Arabia. Another 17 people were missing, Jordan’s foreign ministry said on Sunday. The fatalities are Jordanians who suffered heat stroke.
The pilgrimage to Mecca started on Friday evening at temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius. Authorities urged worshipers to carry umbrellas, drink plenty of water and avoid going outside at all during the particularly hot lunchtime. Nevertheless, at least fourteen people were killed this weekend and the search continues for the missing persons.
Deaths due to crowding
A pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia is one of the five basic obligations of Islam. Heat and large crowds always pose a challenge for pilgrims and law enforcement officers. For example, hundreds of people have died in recent decades as a result of crowding. Last year, about two million people took part in the famous pilgrimage.
