The sailing ship “Nadir” of the German NGO “Resqship” rescued a boat with 61 migrants off the coast of Lampedusa on Monday evening. All help came too late for ten of them.
“The unconscious people have received medical treatment and are awaiting an emergency evacuation. Our thoughts are with their families. We are angry and sad,” the aid organization said.
Ten people were found dead on the flooded lower deck of the boat, Resqship explained on X. The NGO crew evacuated the remaining 51 people, two of whom were unconscious and had to be freed with an axe.
The rescued ship was full of water and had a broken engine. In consultation with the authorities it was transferred to Lampedusa.
Fewer migrants use the Mediterranean route to Italy
Compared to the previous year, the number of migrants, most of whom arrive in Italy from Tunisia and Libya via the central Mediterranean, has decreased. The Ministry of the Interior in Rome counted almost 23,235 people who reached Italy by sea this year. In the same period last year there were 55,662.
