China will investigate European pork imports

Date:

The Asian country thus anticipates its response to the tariffs that Brussels imposes on Chinese electric vehicles, a measure that could directly affect Spain as the main exporter.

China’s Ministry of Commerce has announced an investigation into unfair competition against certain imports of pork and pork products from the European Union (EU). In this way, the Asian country anticipates its response to the tariffs that Brussels imposes on Chinese electric vehicles.

Several analysts have already indicated that there is a good chance that Beijing’s retaliation will focus on countries considered to be the promoters of the above-mentioned tariffs. Therefore, this could directly impact Spain, the leading exporter of pork to China within the Twenty-Seven.

As indicated by Commerce on its website, products such as pork or offal, as well as animal fat and derivatives, will be assessed in the above-mentioned sanctions process. Nevertheless, the investigation will continue for another year.

The official Chinese press has already raised the possibility that some companies might request this investigation, weeks before the date on which Brussels is expected to announce electricity tariffs to China.

Moreover, among other possible reprisals, the official Chinese press recently put forward a plan to increase taxes on the import of sedans and all-terrain vehicles (SUVs) with engines larger than 2.5 liters to 25%.

Key sector

The pork sector is crucial for the export of agricultural products from Spain to China. And according to official data, 61% of the turnover that the Iberian country achieves in this sense comes from its sale.

Nevertheless, the consultancy Trivium China yesterday expected Beijing to give a “selective” response to the tariffs at the geographical level and on the affected sectors: “Agricultural tariffs (…) could punish the main promoters of electric research”.

According to data from the pig association Interpoc, the Spanish state exported more than 560,000 tons of pork producers to China, making the Asian country the destination of 20.33% of that product’s foreign sales.
