Following reports from passengers of repeated flames coming from an engine (see video above), a Melbourne-bound passenger plane made an unscheduled landing in New Zealand on Monday.
All 73 passengers on board the plane are OK and the incident is under investigation, the New Zealand Herald newspaper quoted a statement from Virgin Australia airline. A possible cause could be a bird strike – this is how airlines describe incidents of birds getting into an engine – it was said.
Flames burst from the engine
The plane took off from Queenstown Airport in New Zealand. Eyewitnesses reported flames coming from the right engine and loud popping noises. An accompanying video, filmed from the ground, caused a stir in the local media.
Reports say it was a Boeing 737. The plane was diverted to Invercargill Airport in New Zealand, where it was met by emergency services and landed safely. According to the media, no flames were visible at the time.
Numerous malfunctions involving Boeing aircraft
The incident follows numerous other accidents involving Boeing aircraft. The company has been in ongoing crisis since the crashes of two 737 Max planes that killed a total of 346 more than five years ago.
