Landmines explode – North Korean soldiers cross the border: injured

Date:

Shock in South Korea: Dozens of North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the border into the South – only warning shots convinced them to turn back. As if that wasn’t enough, several Pyongyang regime soldiers were injured by a landmine.

North Korean soldiers moved towards their southern neighbor and crossed the infamous “military demarcation line” between the two hostile states, the Yonhap news agency reported on Tuesday, citing the South Korean military’s general staff. The South Korean army fired warning shots. This was the second border crossing within two weeks.

Yonhap also reported that several North Korean soldiers were injured in the explosion of a landmine near the heavily fortified border. The incident took place while soldiers were laying mines along the border.

Still a state of war
North and South Korea have been formally at war since the end of the Korean War. The two countries are separated by a demilitarized zone about four kilometers wide. The demarcation line runs in the middle of this strip full of mines.

Relationships at their lowest point
Relations between the two countries are currently at a low point. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had announced that he would expand weapons development, including tactical nuclear weapons. In response, South Korea and the United States have increased their defense cooperation.
