Five tourists have already died this year during their stay in Greece. You probably blamed yourself for her death. The hikers are said to have ignored urgent warnings from authorities, hoteliers and residents and therefore died while hiking.
The hikers are said to have set out too carelessly and underestimated the afternoon heat or failed to take their own abilities and age into account. One of the hikers who died also drank a few beers before starting his walk.
BBC presenter took the wrong route: death
The death of a well-known BBC journalist in Great Britain initially made headlines: presenter Michael Mosley was reported missing on the island of Symi in early June and was eventually found dead. He took the wrong route while hiking and collapsed in a spot where searchers had difficulty finding him, authorities said.
This post shows a photo of the late BBC presenter:
There were two more deaths in Crete: once an 80-year-old tourist went for a walk alone and was found dead a day later; another time, a 70-year-old tourist collapsed on the beach and died. A 55-year-old American died while hiking on the small island of Mathraki. A 74-year-old Dutchman went for a walk alone on Samos – and was found dead days later.
Missing hikers are a concern
There are also concerns about several missing people: there is no trace left of an American who had gone on a hiking trip on the island of Amorgos for more than a week. Two elderly French tourists who were supposed to have gone on a hiking trip last week have not yet been found on the island of Sikinos.
Greece has been hit particularly early this year by extreme heat: according to meteorologists, it has never been so hot since measurements started at the beginning of June. Temperatures sometimes rose to 40 degrees – and even more in the blazing afternoon sun.
