Report published – human rights activist accuses Israeli army of torture

Date:

The UN accuses the Israeli army of war crimes, crimes against humanity and torture (see video above). Human rights expert Navi Pillay presented a report on the situation in the occupied territories on Wednesday, including representatives of the armed forces.

The UN agency also investigated six Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip between October 9 and December 2, 2023. Bombs that could destroy several floors of a building were likely used. According to the UN, at least 218 people were killed in the attacks on homes, a school, a refugee camp and a market.

According to the laws of war, civilian provisions must be spared if possible in the event of attacks. If fighters are suspected there, consideration should be given to whether the damage could exceed the hoped-for targets. Even if one or more terrorists or those involved in the October 7 and 8 massacres in Israel were in a building, that does not mean an entire neighborhood is a legitimate target of attack, the report said. They could be crimes against humanity.

Military: “You wanted hell”
“Right now we are focusing on what causes the maximum damage,” a military spokesperson said in October 2023. Another representative of the armed forces directly addressed Hamas and the residents of the Gaza Strip. “Human beasts are treated accordingly. Israel has imposed a total blockade of Gaza. No electricity and no water, only damage. You wanted hell, you will get hell,” he said.

At the same time, the report criticizes armed Palestinian groups that fire projectiles at Israel that could hit civilians. It is said that military equipment or armed forces should generally not be stationed in densely populated areas.

Israel: “UN protects Hamas”
The Israeli government, as it has done many times before, accused the UN Human Rights Office of taking an anti-Israel stance. “There is therefore no doubt that the sole purpose of this thematic report is to denounce and condemn Israel while continuing to protect Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip,” the report said in a statement. The Israeli army is not fighting the civilian population, but Hamas is deliberately hiding among them to cause as much damage as possible.
