A day after the major nighttime operation in Vienna-Brigittenau, in which a suspect pointed a long gun at police officers and was shot shortly afterwards, police have now published further details about the crime.
On Thursday evening, numerous residents alerted police after finding a man armed with a knife on the street around Kapaunplatz. When police arrived, the man fled to his third-floor apartment. The police then tried to make contact with the suspect. Then he suddenly opened the door and threatened him for the first time with a long gun. At that moment, the emergency services fired the first shots. The man fled into the apartment again.
Identity still unclear
From the balcony he may have seen other officers in the courtyard, says police spokesman Matthias Schuster. He pointed the gun again at the officers, who then fired again. The suspect, seriously injured, barricaded himself back inside. Police then stormed the apartment and found the suspect lifeless. An emergency doctor was only able to determine his death. The police assume that the shot, which went towards the balcony, was fatal.
Autopsy ordered
However, the suspect’s identity and motive remain unclear. According to initial information, he could be an Austrian citizen. An autopsy was ordered to determine if the shooter was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. It is also unclear how many shots were actually fired.
During the large-scale operation, officers from the Wega, Cobra, standby unit and the service dog unit were on site.
