A police officer in Waldviertel, Lower Austria, could not believe his eyes when a Czech company bus drove past him. After the inspection, confirmation followed: imminent danger and further serious defects. Incredibly, the dilapidated vehicle was the replacement car as the other one was being repaired!
“It has been a long time since I came across a vehicle in such a sorry state,” says a trained heavy traffic inspector in the Zwettl district. The police officer had actually just finished securing the route to school on the main road in Schwarzenau and was about to leave the central square when he couldn’t believe his eyes: the vehicular pile of misery of a panel van slowly passed in front of him .
He immediately stopped the bus of a Czech shipping company with a Slovak driver (37), who was returning from a delivery to a Waldviertel company.
Damage wasn’t just ‘cosmetic’
Large dents in the driver’s door and enormous welds caused the vehicle to be further examined at the car inspection center in Brunn an der Wild. The result: seven serious defects and once even a risk of delay due to a non-working handbrake! The main reason for the defects was the heavy rust on the brakes etc.
If that was the replacement car…
But the defective exhaust system or incorrectly adjusted headlights were also criticized. “It was actually the company’s replacement car, as the other car was in the workshop for repairs,” the law enforcement officer says, adding another bizarre detail. This also raises the question of what poor condition the “main vehicle” must have been in.
The license plate and registration certificate were immediately removed. Because the driver was also missing important transport documents, he had to pay 1,600 euros on the spot.
