German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) will travel to Israel next Monday for crisis talks. The background is concern about an escalation of the conflict between the Israeli army and the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia. The politician is traveling to the country for the eighth time since the start of the war.
According to her own statement, she wants to talk about the war in the Gaza Strip, the ongoing catastrophic humanitarian situation there and the path to a two-state solution. The latter refers to an independent Palestinian state that exists peacefully alongside Israel. Both Hamas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reject this. Netanyahu met with the German foreign minister in Israel on April 17.
Meeting with Katz
This time, Baerbock will travel to Israel on Monday after the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg, where the emphasis will be on support for Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. In the evening she will give a speech at a security conference near the coastal metropolis of Tel Aviv. Talks are scheduled for Tuesday with Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz and Palestinian Authority (PA) Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa on the situation in the West Bank and the PA’s reform efforts.
Tuesday evening we continue to Lebanon. Baerbock wants to speak to Prime Minister Najib Mikati in Beirut – for example about the tense situation at the border with Israel. The Israeli military recently approved plans for an offensive in Lebanon, raising concerns about an escalation of the conflict. Hezbollah is currently repeatedly attacking Israel with rockets.
