Open Air Festival – 41st Danube Island Festival started in fantastic weather

Date:

The Vienna Danube Island Festival started its 41st edition on Friday with summer temperatures and sometimes oppressive humidity. Until Sunday, the open-air festival organized by the capital’s SPÖ invites you to numerous concerts and sports and entertainment programs with free admission.

Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and his Social Democratic city council members, with the exception of climate councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky, visited the working world island at the furthest tip of the party area near the Reichsbrücke.

They had brought federal party leader Andreas Babler as a guest. The town hall boss admitted that he had attended all 41 editions of the open-air festival so far. It was not the first time for Babler either. He wanted to ‘make many more kilometers’ on the island.

Blood sugar measurement and goulash
During their tour, the two SPÖ grandees boarded a container in which blood pressure and blood sugar levels could be measured. “I’m healthy,” Ludwig said happily and proudly, presenting him with a treat for him to collect. And because not only love, but also friendship apparently goes through the stomach, the red duo tasted a goulash together before listening to the music of Der Nino from Vienna and Voodoo Jürgens.

Austria’s European Championship match got off to a quiet start
Although there were already some people out and about, the flow of people to the 4.5 kilometer long festival site remained noticeably limited as the afternoon progressed. In addition to the oppressive heat, the European Championship match between Austria and Poland was probably also a reason. Tip: There is also public viewing on the island!

On Friday, rap (Clueso, Juju) and German pop (Provinz) are on the main stage. Peter Kraus and Semino Rossi, among others, are still waiting for their concerts on the Schlager stage. The culture tent is dedicated to country and line dancing until the late evening hours.

Tip: Don’t forget a raincoat!
Despite the early summer weather, visitors should note that they should bring a raincoat for the evening hours – umbrellas are not allowed – as individual showers or thunderstorms cannot be ruled out later in the day according to the forecast (see video above).

Disruptive action as a “security risk”
Moreover, one should be prepared for one or two disruptive actions, as the “Last Generation” had previously announced a protest action for the Danube Island Festival.

Mayor Ludwig said: “I cannot imagine a less favorable place for this than the Danube Island Festival.”
