A 36-year-old British woman has been sentenced to life in prison after killing her own parents and hiding them in their home for four years. Police say the case shocked even experienced investigators.
In 2019, the woman poisoned her 70-year-old father with drugs and then killed her 71-year-old mother with a hammer. She then hid the bodies in the shared house. According to the BBC, she hid her father’s remains in a “self-built mausoleum” made of bricks in his study. Her mother’s body was found wrapped in a sleeping bag in an upstairs closet.
It was only four years later, in the summer of 2023, that the gruesome double murder was discovered. British TV networks released bodycam video of her arrest on Friday, showing her calmly answering police questions and explaining where the bodies could be found.
“Bad guy caught”
“My father’s body is in there,” she answers impassively. When asked where her mother was, she described to the police officer: “A little more complicated… there are about five cupboards upstairs, she is behind the bed, way back, next to the sink. It’s the second.”
She then tells the officers: “I knew it would happen one day. It’s good that I’m serving my sentence.” She adds, “Stop it, at least you caught the bad guy.”
Lying to doctors and family members
According to the British news agency PA, the perpetrator must spend at least 36 years behind bars, according to dpa. To cover up the crime, she lied to doctors and family members for years. She said her parents were ill, away or traveling, while she continued to receive their pensions and had accumulated large debts in their names.
The doctors became suspicious when the parents missed several appointments. The police then started an investigation and arrested the woman a year ago. During the trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, the judge described how the crime had been planned for months.
An Essex Police spokesman said he was shocked by the extent of the deception. “The details of this case shock even the most experienced homicide detectives,” he said. The case caused a stir in Britain, partly because of the bodycam video of the arrest.
