The Boeing company announced on Friday that it will lay off 10% of its workforce “in the coming months”, equivalent to about 17,000 people.
The layoffs will affect directors, managers and rank-and-file employees, Boeing President and CEO Kelly Ortberg said in a letter to all employees. Moreover, he has promised more detailed information in the coming week.
Boeing has been facing a strike since September 13, with no signs of it ending anytime soon, and this is in addition to the technical problems recorded by several of its aircraft in recent times: the company has reported at least seven incidents in 2024 alone , although none were fatal.
After the layoffs were announced, and in trading after Wall Street closed, the company’s shares fell 1.90%.
