The Luxembourg politician was the preferred candidate to occupy the vice presidency due to the division by the political groups in 2021
The plenary session of the European Parliament this Wednesday elected Marc Angel to hold one of the vice presidencies of this institution. The Luxembourg socialist succeeds Eva Kaili, who was fired after her arrest for her alleged involvement in the ‘Qatargate’ bribery scheme. Angel competed for the position with Greens candidate Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield, who has garnered 98 support; and with the Italian Annalisa Tardino, of Identity and Democracy, with 185 votes.
In the end, Angel won in the second round of voting against his two rivals, with 307 support (he needed a simple majority of 296 votes). The post therefore remains in the hands of the European Socialist Group (S&D). The division of the leadership of the European Parliament, consisting of fourteen vice-presidents, took place in the negotiations between the political groups at the end of 2021. However, the position did not automatically fall into his hands, but the socialist candidate had to receive the necessary support.
The Luxembourger is currently Vice-President of the Committee on Labor and Social Affairs and a member of the Committee on Petitions and of the European Parliament’s Joint Delegation between the European Union and Chile. With a degree in Tourism and Economics, Angel won his seat in the European Parliament in 2019. Before moving to Brussels, he was a member of the Luxembourg Parliament and Treasurer of the NATO Assembly. In addition, among his other activities, the creation of the NGO ‘Stop AIDS Now’, for the prevention of AIDS in Luxembourg, stands out.
