turning point in the war? – Ukraine is apparently embarking on a major counter-offensive

Date:

Nearly 14 months have passed since Russia invaded Ukraine, and now the great turning point may well be here. Apparently Kiev is now planning the big counter-attack. Ukrainians in occupied areas were ordered to flee, and satellite images show already dug trenches and Russian defense positions.

Recently, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Wereschuk indirectly called on Ukrainians in Russian-occupied territories to flee. “I advise Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories to go to third countries or to prepare,” she wrote on Telegram without further details. “You know what to do, take care of yourself and your children.”

Heavy artillery battles in various places
In an interview with an Estonian TV station, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov also spoke of a planned spring offensive in which “Western tanks” will be deployed. However, heavy artillery duels were reported on Tuesday. According to Ukrainian sources, two Russian electronic warfare systems have been destroyed.

New Russian artillery attacks were also reported from the town of Avdiivka in the Donbass. Although the remaining residents had recently been called on several times to leave the city, there were still civilians in the city, according to Mayor Vitali Barabasch. “There are still eight children in the city, but you would have to be a passionate spy to find them,” he told Ukrajinska Pravda. Avdiivka is located nearly 15 kilometers north of the Russian and insurgent-controlled city of Donetsk.

Attacking with “Kamikaze Drones”
New battles were also reported from the heavily contested town of Bachmut. According to Ukrainian sources, 20 Russian attacks around the city were repelled on Tuesday, as well as another 25 near Avdiivka and Marinka. Russian drones also attacked the port city of Odessa and other locations, and Ukraine reported a total of 17 attacks by Iranian Shahed-136 kamikaze drones.

Satellite images show trenches
Another indication of an impending offensive by Ukraine is satellite images of Russian trenches and defenses in Crimea. Apparently Moscow also expects an attack from the Ukrainians. Kiev had repeatedly stated that it wanted to recapture all territory occupied by Russia. However, Western military experts doubt whether the strength of troops and weapons is sufficient for this.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Poland on Wednesday. Talks are planned with, among others, Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. Poland is one of the strongest supporters of neighboring Ukraine and has repeatedly campaigned for Western military aid.

When it came to the delivery of Leopard 2 main battle tanks, Poland put pressure on the German government for a long time, which finally agreed. In addition, Poland has an important function as a logistical hub for military support from the West.
