A 50-year-old double murderer escaped from prison in Berlin. He was released unescorted for the first time and never returned to prison. A report previously showed that relaxations were possible.
A national search is now underway for the killer, who should have returned from his authorized departure to Tegel prison on Thursday at 5 p.m. According to a Senate spokesperson, the man has been allowed to leave prison repeatedly since 2005, but until now never without an escort.
Before the final outcome, a forensic psychiatric report was prepared. This showed that relaxation measures had to be taken. The staff strictly adhered to all regulations and precautions. There was no indication that the criminal could not return.
Imprisoned for almost three decades
The fugitive has been in prison for 27 years – the murders took place in 1995. Jan Kleinheinrich, spokesman for Berlin Justice Senator Felor Badenberg (CDU), said there had been no complaints about previous outcomes. ‘We know where he was. But he was not found there.”
Police are now searching across the country for the 50-year-old.
