At least 24 people have been killed in a tragic attack on a tent camp of displaced people near the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian sources. The attack is said to have been carried out by Israel.
Completely unexpectedly, Israeli tank shells hit the tent camp. The incident took place on Friday in Al-Mawasi near Rafah, where many people have fled – after the Israeli army began its offensive in the refugee-filled town on the border with Egypt in early May.
The Health Ministry, which is controlled by the Palestinian terror group Hamas, said on Friday that 24 people were killed and 47 other Palestinians were injured. The military announced that initial investigations did not indicate Israeli authorship.
The information could not initially be independently verified. Citing initial investigations, the Israeli military said the attack in Al-Mawasi was not carried out by Israeli forces. The incident remains under further investigation.
New wave of displacement from Rafah
The army had previously said it had killed at least 32 Palestinians in attacks in the city of Rafah and other parts of the Gaza Strip. Tanks therefore advanced towards the western and northern parts of the city, having already captured the east, south and center. The attacks came from planes, tanks and ships off the coast.
This caused a new wave of displacement from the city. More than a million displaced people previously stayed there, most of whom had to flee again. The Israeli military also said its forces carried out “precise, intelligence-driven” operations in the Rafah area, involving troops in hand-to-hand combat and discovering tunnels belonging to the radical Islamist group Hamas.
Israel wants to continue its operations
The Israeli army announced on Friday that operations would continue in the central and southern Gaza Strip. On Friday evening, a Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) rocket launch site was hit in an area in the city of Khan Younis designated as a humanitarian zone. The launch site was therefore located in a place where many civilians would have sought protection from the fighting in the Gaza Strip. Measures have been taken to prevent damage. “Terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip continue to plant weapons and terrorist infrastructure among the civilian population, endangering them and using them as human shields,” the military said.
According to reports, fighting also continues in Rafah. “Troops continue to eliminate terrorists in close combat,” the military said in a statement. Israeli soldiers also discovered additional tunnels in the city near the border with Egypt. Several terrorists were also killed in the central part of the coastal area.
The military’s information also could not be independently verified. The army also announced on Friday that two soldiers were killed in fighting in the Gaza Strip on Thursday.
