After jumping into the pool at Laakirchen’s outdoor pool, a six-year-old boy panicked and pulled his mother underwater. Fortunately, rescuers arrived immediately and pulled the two to the edge. The two lifesavers describe the anxious moments to “Krone”.
Laakirchen’s outdoor swimming pool does not stay out of the headlines. Only on Tuesday there was a fight between swimmers, in which the lifeguard who intervened was also injured. He is currently on sick leave and is being represented by water rescuers who were called in on Thursday. A six-year-old child panicked after jumping from a diving platform into the cool water.
Mother dragged underwater
His mother was there immediately because she was watching her child from the 1.90 meter deep pool. But the boy clung to the adult and pulled her underwater. The woman had no chance to keep the child upright and called for help. “I was just treating a leg injury, but my colleague immediately jumped into the pool and brought them both to the edge,” says Anna Zimmermann from the Laakirchen water rescue service.
Risk of secondary drowning
Mother and child swallowed a lot of water during the dramatic scenes and were quickly taken to hospital. “There was a risk of secondary drowning,” says the water rescuer. “Inhaling a lot of water can lead to pulmonary edema, which can cause serious health problems up to 24 hours later.” Even good swimmers should not overestimate themselves in the water: “An adult can be struck by a child who is in danger of drowning. Getting overwhelmed,” says Zimmermann.
The current example shows once again that well-intentioned can often be poorly done. Although the mother was there to care for her child, she had no chance of saving the boy in an emergency.
This shows how quickly any of us can find ourselves in an emergency situation (through no fault of our own) and needing help from others. Thank God there are people who sacrifice their free time to be there at that moment. Thanks for that!
