A survey among almost 2000 Viennese hospital doctors shows shocking results: almost 80 percent indicate that they can no longer adequately care for their patients – every day.
The danger reports that have been made public in recent months have made the enormous problems in the hospitals more visible. But they are just the tip of the iceberg.
Poor education
This was the result of a representative survey of 1894 hospital doctors commissioned by the Vienna Medical Association and conducted by Peter Hajek. And the first results are amazing. 84 percent of those surveyed see a significant loss of quality in patient care (see chart). Eight out of ten doctors indicate that the current preconditions also lead to a poorer education of doctors in training.
“We keep getting calls for help about working conditions or situations that are no longer acceptable to the doctors,” says the president of the Vienna Medical Association, Johannes Steinhart. These were partly decisive for the preparation of the research. “We wanted to map the current situation to objectify the subject,” Steinhart continues.

And the current situation is alarming. Because almost 80 percent of doctors confirm that there are major bottlenecks in patient care. “The colleagues can no longer care for patients in the way that medical standards require,” said Stefan Ferenci, vice president of the Medical Association.
Doctors abandoned by city politics?
68 percent of hospital doctors also say that Alderman for Health Peter Hacker (SPÖ) does not take the risk reports seriously enough. Ferenci: “If the health organization (WIGEV) denies reality, it becomes an accomplice to the downfall of the hospital system.”
