Entry to a hotel room in Italy on a red-white-red warrant. That meant double bad luck for a Romanian in northern Italy: During a family gathering, the family man (40) had been stolen from the party over an alleged encounter – to have fun with the absent cousin’s wife at a hotel in Spresiano.
But for the impostors, the fun soon ended: Some 30 men from the Italian special forces stormed the room and roughly pulled the lovers out from under the covers. Reason: When checking in, the alarm sirens blared at the reception – the man was wanted by the Austrian judiciary with an arrest warrant. Because of armed robberies in Tyrol. At least you thought so.
It was the wrong man
It turned out that the investigators had handcuffed the wrong person: They were looking for the 40-year-old’s cheated cousin. Months earlier, he was on his robbery tour in Tyrol with a copied ID from his relative – and used his identity.
Weeks later, the wanted criminal went online – during a police operation in Brussels. The 40-year-old has already been extradited to the red-white-red authorities. And the wrongfully arrested Romanian was allowed to leave the cell again. Though he now has to face the strictest judge at home – his betrayed wife. He probably won’t be able to expect a fair trial.
