Citizens demand a solution – Alko scene in Floridsdorf: “Put away chairs”

Date:

For years there have been problems with crowds of drunk people in front of the train station in Vienna-Floridsdorf. Citizens are finally demanding solutions and have a concrete proposal for Jonas Square.

The Floridsdorfer Bahnhof – the gateway for tens of thousands of Viennese to the district. But the problems with the forecourt alcohol scene remain.

Inside, the drunks are chased away from the station by guards. But they settle right in front of it. In groups. Loud shouting, arguing, insults. “I don’t recognize my old Floridsdorf anymore. The station square is unappetizing and politicians have been looking at it for years,” says Krone reader Alfred Haberl.

What should politicians do? His suggestion: remove the stone benches that serve as fences for planting beds. “That makes the accommodation unattractive for the stage,” says the Floridsdorfer.

District leader Georg Papai (SPÖ) wants to take the proposal to the next working group. However, his spokesperson limits himself: “Reducing the number of seats does not automatically mean that the challenges will be solved. This could shift the situation to bus stops and schools. We absolutely don’t want that.”

What still applies: The district wants an alcohol ban for Jonas-Platz and has also decided on this in the district parliament. However, only the town hall can implement this. There has been no approval from there for years.

The first steps have already been taken
The area was once an attractive place for shopping. With small but nice specialty shops. “In principle, this location would be very attractive, but a solution must first be found so as not to be constantly confronted with the alcohol scene,” explains Dietmar Schwingenschrot, deputy department chairman at the Chamber of Commerce and Floridsdorfer.

The province has already done some things. Police are visible on site, pedestrian crossings have been improved and a team of social workers is caring for those affected. According to the district administration, a cleanliness concept was also implemented. A start, but apparently not enough.
