More than twenty people have been killed in a grenade attack near the offices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Gaza Strip. On Friday afternoon, “heavy caliber” bullets struck “in the immediate vicinity of the offices and houses of the International Committee of the Red Cross.”
“This incident caused a massive influx of victims to the nearby Red Cross field hospital,” the organization based in the Swiss city of Geneva added. 22 deaths and 45 injuries were recorded there. There are reports of even more victims.
Hundreds of displaced people live in tents around the ICRC office. Attacks in “dangerous proximity to humanitarian facilities endanger the lives of civilians and Red Cross staff,” the organization continued. The locations are known to the parties to the conflict and are also “clearly marked with the emblem of the Red Cross”.
The Hamas-controlled Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip reported 25 deaths and 50 injuries in the attack. The Israeli army attacked “tents of displaced persons in the Al-Mawasi area.” The ICRC office is located in the town near Rafah.
The field hospital, surrounded by hundreds of refugee tents, was opened in mid-May. Up to 200 people can be cared for every day and receive urgently needed emergency measures.
