Deforestation, exploitation: endangered animals in the rainforest

Date:

The rainforests are shrinking rapidly due to deforestation and agricultural use. Countless unique animal species are in great danger due to the loss of their habitat. Without immediate protection, many of these unique animals are at risk of extinction.

Life pulses in the rainforests of our Earth. They are characterized by a particularly warm, humid climate, which is approximately constant throughout the year. The fantastic conditions for the growth and prosperity of a variety of animals and plants make the rainforest one of the most species-rich areas on earth.

Incredible but true: at least half of all animal and plant species we know originate from the rainforest. And every day new species are discovered in the thickets.

  • At least half of all known animal and plant species originate from rainforests
  • The Amazon region alone is home to no fewer than 40,000 different plant species, 378 reptiles, 427 mammals, 1,294 birds, 426 amphibians and 3,000 fish species.
  • The rainforests are in acute danger due to slash-and-burn agriculture for livestock and agriculture
  • Another reason for the destruction of the rainforest is the extraction of mineral resources. Iron ore, bauxite, tantalum, tin, nickel, copper, gold and diamonds are mined in rainforest areas
  • The rainforest is also subject to deforestation for paper and tropical wooden furniture. Eucalyptus is grown in the forests of Brazil and Indonesia on cleared areas for paper production and many hundred-year-old trees are cut down for furniture

Ten animals threatened by habitat loss:

  1. Sumatra tiger
  2. Sumatran elephant
  3. Orangutans
  4. Lowland gorilla
  5. Jaguar
  6. African forest elephant
  7. Okapi
  8. White-cheeked spider monkey
  9. Riesenotter
  10. Yellow-banded treecreeper (a dart frog)

But preserving the green wonder is not only of fundamental importance for the plants and animals of the rainforest. The overall well-being of the planet is closely linked to the condition of its tropical forests.

Global companies’ hunger for raw materials is eating away at the forests
But companies’ hunger for raw materials is eating away at global forests. The Amazon region, the Indonesian rainforest and the rainforest in the Congo Basin are being deforested for palm oil, rubber, beef, soy for animal feed, cocoa and coffee.
