Major fire overnight – dozens of residents rescued from fire in high-rise building in Upper Austria

Large-scale operation for the emergency services in Vöcklabruck (Upper Austria): On Sunday evening around 21:30, a fire broke out in an eight-storey residential building. About 130 firefighters had to evacuate 28 parties who were trapped in their homes by flames and smoke. Ten residents had to be taken to hospital due to possible smoke inhalation.

At 21:25 the alarm came in: fire in a multi-storey building. The first and second fire brigades were immediately sent to the operational address. For an unknown reason, a fire broke out in an apartment on the fourth floor. Numerous people were trapped in their homes. Alarm level 2 was immediately activated and nine other fire brigades were alerted. The first police patrol to arrive immediately began rescuing families and their children. First responders rescued an 84-year-old resident from the apartment on fire and brought her to safety.

20 respiratory protection teams in action
According to initial reports, several people were missing and trapped in their apartments above the fire apartment due to heavy smoke in the stairs. Several respiratory protection teams went to rescue people and brought the families with children to safety one by one. In the meantime, an external attack was carried out via the telescopic mast platform to contain the fire from the outside and cool the apartment from the enormous heat. In total, more than twenty respiratory protection teams were deployed.

Smoke caused ten injuries
A large contingent of the Red Cross was also immediately on the scene. Ten people were taken to the Vöcklabruck State Hospital with suspected smoke inhalation. The other rescued people were accommodated in nearby accommodations and were further cared for. During the extinguishing work, more and more people were removed from the danger zone and handed over to the Red Cross. The fire brigade also took several people to the Vöcklabruck fire station, where they were fed.

The cause of the fire is still unclear
More than 130 firefighters, the Red Cross with numerous helpers and the executive power were present. After the first attack, the fire was quickly under control. The crew of TANK 1 is currently keeping a fire watch until Monday morning. Constant checks are being carried out using thermal imaging cameras. Ten other residents had to stay one night in a nearby hotel because the apartments could not yet be occupied. The cause of the fire is still the subject of police investigation.
