Policewoman injured – first riots at demonstration against Vienna Pride

Date:

The 26th edition of the Vienna Rainbow Parade is in full swing on the Ring on Saturday afternoon. In addition to the march for the rights of gays, lesbians and transgenders, a counter-demonstration called “March of the Family” took place at the same time. A short time later, the police reported the first riots at the rally against the Pride Parade.

On Twitter, the Vienna police reported protection zones within a radius of 50 meters, which the counter-protesters did not comply with despite repeated requests. The officers used pepper spray and an injured policewoman was injured by a glass bottle being thrown at her.

“Rip Your Lips”
About 200 participants of the Christian fundamentalists “March of the Family” are said to have taken part in the counter-demonstration at Stephansplatz. This group has been taking a stand against abortion and same-sex marriage for years. At the same time, left-wing activists responded to the right-wing movement by saying, “Shut up.”

The police prevented further riots. The counter-demonstration was ended by police at 3 p.m.
