You know it is – just not when! California is confronted with the nightmare that nobody can stop. According to geologists, the danger of a fatal mega-horse-being-the notorious “big”, that is, the very large Ha’s dramatically increased. This means that 25 million people live in a ticking time bomb.
California has around 39 million inhabitants, and about 66 percent of them – more than 25 million people – live in areas with a high earthquake risk. Now alarming is: according to the US Geological Survey (USGS) the chance of a destructive earthquake has increased by no less than 72 percent by 2055.
A scenario such as from a disaster film: the dreaded “big one” – an earthquake of strength 7.8 or worse – can therefore put entire cities into rubble. “Geologically speaking, the next” Big One “is already too late,” warns seismologist Sarah Minson. And the land is already vibrating: only a few days ago five earthquake were registered within 21 minutes in front of the coast of North California – Creepy Harbing?
“We’ve been over for 17 years”
This time it could not be the well-known San-Andreas-Geul, but the treacherous Hayward-Kolom. It runs directly under the densely populated East Bay. Minson explains: “In the past, this column has created a large earthquake every 140 years. We are now 17 years old.”
The scenario dramatic: 1800 fatalities, 50,000 injured, up to $ 200 billion in damage. For comparison: in the last “large” in 1906, 3000 people died in San Francisco, 80 percent of the buildings were destroyed.
The USGS recommends that California citizens are preparing for an emergency: “You must store drinking water, sustainable food and a means of communication that also works in the case of a disaster.” Citizens need to know more precisely on the “Ready.GOV” website and get everything needed.
