A room fire in a residential building on Wehlistrasse in Vienna-Leopoldstadt led to the fire service on Monday afternoon. A total of 33 volunteers from the professional fire brigade of Vienna were on site to fight the fire.
Dense clouds of smoke poured from the windows of a six-story residential building on the commercial wharf and courtyard of the residential complex. When the alarmed troops of the Vienna Fire Brigade arrived, the apartment on the third floor was already completely on fire. The apartment owner managed to get out of the burning apartment in time. However, he left the apartment door open, causing thick smoke to spread down the stairwell.
Several other residents of the house were able to escape on their own. Some could be heard asking for help from their balconies and windows. They were brought to safety and calmed down by the fire brigade.
Fast fire extinguishing
The alarmed emergency services fought the flames with one line from the stairwell and another from the turntable ladder from outside. The fire in the apartment was quickly extinguished and a flame spread to the apartment above was prevented. Six people were handed over to the Vienna professional rescue service, two of whom had to be taken to a hospital for treatment.
