Hundreds of animals have died in a fire at Bangkok’s Chatuchak Market, popular among tourists, local media report. The fire broke out in the early morning hours and witnesses spoke of animals screaming.
Monkeys, dogs, cats, birds and fish, including exotic species, died in the fire on Tuesday, the Bangkok Post newspaper reported. In addition, snakes, rabbits and chickens are also said to have died, wrote the newspaper “The Nation”. No people were injured.
Witness heard ‘animal noises’
The investigation into the cause of the fire was still ongoing on Tuesday. The fire was initially known to have broken out shortly after 4am local time in the animal husbandry area, also known as Sri Somrat Market. According to the information, this includes approximately 118 sales stands with an area of approximately 1,400 square meters.
Animals were making loud noises, a witness told The Nation newspaper. The fire was under control after about 30 minutes, the Bangkok Post reported.
One of the largest weekend markets in Thailand
Chatuchak Market is considered one of the largest weekend markets in Thailand. According to the operators, it attracts around 200,000 visitors every Saturday and Sunday. The open-air market offers food, clothing, art and household appliances at around 15,000 stalls. Parts of the market are also open during the week.
